Premier Science is an independent publisher of open access journals. Our focus is growing and developing fields with great potential for innovation, research, and discovery. We utilise our own software, such as Eworkflow, to organise the submission, peer-review, and decision-making of manuscripts. We combine innovation and technology with editorial excellence, a commitment to unparalleled reach and visibility, and a passion for advocacy for all areas of scientific exploration as we work to publish and share science that inspires.

Overarching Principles

Premier Science subscribes to the following princples which help guide and shape our policies and behaviour across the board:

  1. Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing – version 4 published 15th September 2022 (these guidelines are jointly developed by The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), the Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA), and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME)
  2. WAME Professionalism Code of Conduct
  3. COPE Guidelines
  4. ICMJE Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly work in Medical Journals

Ownership

Premier Science, the Publisher, is owned by Premier Science Ltd, a private limited company registered in England and Wales, United Kingdom, with company number 16665066 and Value Added Tax (VAT) number GB506237314, founded 21st August 2025 as a subsidiary of Rockstar Private Equity Ltd, a private limited company registered in England and Wales, United Kingdom, with company number 10383469, founded 19th September 2016.

Prior to this Premier Science was part of Eworkflow Ltd (founded 3rd July 2023), a private limited company registered in England and Wales, United Kingdom, with company number 14975811 and Value Added Tax (VAT) number GB447864156. Eworkflow Ltd has two Directors, who are also the shareholders of Eworkflow Ltd and Rockstar Private Equity Ltd – Dr Riaz Agha and Mrs Maliha Agha – the Management Team of Premier Science and Eworkflow.

Eworkflow is the software company that powers the systems Premier Science uses to handle manuscript submissions.

How is Premier Science Funded?

Premier Science is funded at present through two principal pathways:
1. Investment from the owners.
2. Open access revenues through APCs.
In the future, other revenue streams may potentially develop such as advertising.

Where do publishing operations take place?

Premier Science has the following registered office: 5th Floor, 167-169 Great Portland Street, London W1W 5PF. However, Editors and Publishers work from their own homes or universities/institutions and are distributed around the world. This reduces both costs and carbon footprint.

Dr Riaz Agha is the Founder and Publishing Director at Premier Science. Dr Agha has 20+ years of experience in Scholarly Publishing. He launched IJS Publishing Group (IJSPG) in 2003 and took its leader title International Journal of Surgery (IJS) to become the second highest ranked journal in the SURGERY category of Web of Science with an impact factor of 15.3 for 2022. Dr Agha also launched Elsevier’s first gold open access journal in IJS Case Reports in 2010 and one of the early mega-journals Annals of Medicine and Surgery in 2013. Dr Agha also launched an international Research Registry, aiming to improve registration of all types of research studies. IJSPG was acquired by Wolters Kluwer in late 2022. Dr Agha has also served on the Council of the Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE) in 2011-13 and was lead organiser for the inaugural COPE India Seminar in 2013.

Dr Agha is also a Practising Plastic Surgeon working in London’s Harley Street having completed his training in the London Deanery in April 2020. He is also President-elect of the Section of Plastic Surgery at the Royal Society of Medicine. In 2018, he was awarded a doctorate at Balliol College, University of Oxford where he was a Clarendon Scholar (awarded to the top <1% of 20,000 applicants). His thesis was titled: Evidence-based Plastic Surgery: the role of research registration, protocols and reporting quality. He was supervised by Professor Peter McCulloch, Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences and Professor Dennis Orgill, Department of Plastic Surgery, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. He was also awarded a Balliol Interdisciplinary Institute Grant, BAPRAS Paton Masser Memorial Fund Prize and the Brackenbury Fund award, Balliol College, for work to develop the Preferred Reporting guidelines for Case Series in Surgery (PROCESS Guideline).

In 2010, he was awarded a Scholarship from NICE for his research project on national surgical surveillance. He subsequently worked with Sir Bruce Keogh and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to improve coverage and focus of their indicators for acute hospital services.

He graduated from Guy’s, King’s and St. Thomas’ Medical School in London with distinctions and a 1st in his intercalated BSc in Anatomy. He has been awarded 50 academic prizes, published 150 scientific papers and given 150 presentations at national/international level. Dr Agha has significant online expertise having sat on the Web Committee for the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) and having built two websites for NATO. Dr Agha has been awarded Fellowship of the Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH).

Dr Agha has been a Consultant on healthcare and technology to Mr Christopher Jonas CBE, member of the Joint Ventures Board of the Bank of Scotland, former Vice-Chairman of the Governing Council of University College London and the former Chairman of the Further Education Council. Dr Agha was cited as an “inspirational entrepreneur” by The Rt. Hon. John Hutton MP, Former Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform at his keynote speech during Enterprise week 2007. In 2014 he was awarded Freedom of the City of London and became an NHS Clinical Entrepreneur in 2019. Dr Agha has also been an Ambassador for Enterprise UK.

Maliha Agha BSc(Hons), MSc, MPH, FRSPH

Maliha Agha is Publishing Director at Premier Science. She has over a decade of scholarly publishing experience having joined IJS Publishing Group in 2014 and managed the Editorial Office until 2022. She now leads on the online publication of Premier Science’s content on PremierScience.com.

Maliha has a Master’s (with merit) in Public Health from King’s College London in 2012. Her Master’s thesis was titled: Interventions to Reduce and Prevent Obesity in Pre-Conceptual and Pregnant Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. She was supervised by Professor Jane Sandall CBE.

Maliha was also awarded a 1st in her BSc(Hons) and MSc in Physiology from the University of Karachi, Pakistan. Over the years, she has published numerous papers and presented her work at international conferences.

Maliha has worked on developing two websites for NATO and also completed a 1-year internship for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in London in 2012-13. She has been awarded Fellowship of the Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH).

Any one single metric cannot define the impact of academic research. Premier Science signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) in November 2025. We did this to show our support for using multiple measures and metrics to portray the impact of our journal portfolio.
