Introducing a new journal, dedicated to original research and reviews on critical topics in plant biology, presents an opportunity to address this gap. As the volume of research accelerates, we at Premier Science see the need for a new platform to synthesize and assess emerging trends and future directions in plant-based research, especially where interrelated subspecialties overlap. Thus, the new Premier Journal of Plant Biology aims to serve the critical role of curating the most significant and timely issues in the field. Demand for a new journal of plant biology stems from the rapid expansion of plant sciences into an ever-increasing number of subspecialties over the past few decades. Basic areas such as morphology, anatomy, physiology, cell biology, systematics, and ecology now encompass molecular biology, biochemistry, and biophysics. They all intersect with applied plant sciences such as agronomy, biotechnology, economic botany, food science and technology, forestry, horticulture, natural resource management, global sustainability, and plant pathology. Although the field of plant biology benefits from a diversity of researchers, early-career scientists often face barriers in academic publishing. Our new journal encourages their work, thereby ensuring a diversity of perspectives and experiences, from established senior-level researchers to those closer to the beginning of their careers.

The establishment of a new journal of plant biology represents a bold step toward enhancing the visibility, integration, and application of plant science research. By addressing emerging trends and supporting open science, the journal will not only contribute to the scientific community but also to society’s broader challenges. The primary focus of the Premier Journal of Plant Biology is to identify and explore “hot topics”—i.e., areas of plant biology that are gaining significant attention due to their scientific importance, potential for practical applications, or societal impact. Examples of such topics might include: CRISPR and genome editing in plants, plant responses to climate change, plant microbiome and plant–microbe interactions, advances in plant phenotyping and big data, and synthetic biology and plant biotechnology. In addition, the journal prioritizes studies that offer insights into the translational aspects of plant research, particularly those addressing global challenges such as food security, environmental sustainability, and climate adaptation. The time is right for a new journal focused on synthesizing knowledge, guiding future research, and addressing the pressing questions in plant science.
